FIREBLOCKING: What does "or approved" mean in the codes?

The building code lists items that can be used as fireblocking, then it says “or approved” and offers little guidance. What ASTM or UL standard should be referenced and what does it mean if the test is “modified”?  If you join us for this class we will explain all of this and we will tell you about a fire where they go this wrong in hopes that you can learn from someone else mistake.

Standards

A discussion about fire test standards might not sound exciting, HOWEVER when you have a former kindergarten teacher who magically turns the technical document into a story, the discussion is (dare I say) painless. This segment is basically pieces of the puzzle that we will assemble together at the end of the training.

Codes

Let's see what the codes say about fireblocking. Don’t worry we'll animate the codes & help you see how to apply the information to your work. It should be relatively painless since we sprinkle a little kindergarten magic on it. So, if you are one of those people who wants to build better you might accidently have fun (shhh don’t tell!).

Connect the Dots

We connect the codes & standards to a submittal review as we look at a few products and determine what does and doesn’t meet code. If you have gone down this path before, alone; you may already know there are modified test standards. Do you know the modifications that took place or how they impact the fire dynamics of the test.
